And who said you can't fix stupid?

Day 40 (Category: Wisdom)

Today’s Reading: Lev. 6-7, Matt. 25:1-30

Today’s Reflection: Matt. 25:3 They that were foolish took their lamps, and took no oil with them:

The phrase “living on empty” comes to mind when I read this verse. To be honest, even that doesn’t really do it justice, because this kind of “living” isn’t really living at all; it is rather a slow, painful death when you truly consider it. Think with me, if you will, of the people you know (if not yourself) who are living on empty. That is, they are merely a shell of a person without any essence, substance, or meaning to their existence. People who live only for the moment, without any caution or heed of pending danger or consequence, will always be found lacking what it takes to survive this life, much less the life in the hereafter. Let us consider first the name they were given; foolish. This word literally means dull, stupid, heedless, or absurd. The question I’m asking is, were they called foolish because they took no oil with them, or did they take no oil with them because they were foolish? I am in favor of the latter, simply because of the fact that Jesus first mentioned their condition, and then mentioned the symptoms resulting from their condition. The sickness was foolishness; the result was poor decision-making. In other words, if you can fix the foolishness, then you can eliminate the symptoms! How then do we “fix stupid”? We go to The Word of God! Ps. 119:105 still says, “Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.” Prov. 1:7 also says, “The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge: but fools despise wisdom and instruction.” So, if you want to learn how to avoid future crisis as a result of foolish living, then look no further than the guidelines of the scriptures and the voice of The Holy Spirit in your life! Oil, being symbolic of The Holy Spirit, also teaches us in this passage that without The Holy Spirit in our lives, we will continue to live on empty and be found wanting when Christ returns. What about you? Do you ignore the guidance of scripture and the leading of The Spirit, while simultaneously throwing all caution to the wind in your quest for a quick fix or a good time? If so, let this be your warning that while you’re playing games with your life, the bridegroom is coming! Have you made your preparations to meet with Him? If not, you can do so today! Surrender to Christ once and for all!

Just go with the flow.....NOT!!

Day 30 (Category: Wisdom)

Today’s Reading: Exodus 23-24, Matt. 20:1-16

Today’s Reflection: Ex. 23:2a Thou shalt not follow a multitude to do evil…

I believe it would do our society a great service, were every man, woman, boy and girl to commit this verse to memory long enough for it to work all the way from our heads to our hearts to our hands and feet! Today’s generation seems to be starving for so much attention that we are willing to compromise all that is right, just as long as we fit in somewhere. The old saying, “Everybody’s doing it!” is one of the LAST reasons anyone should decide to do anything! History itself teaches us that the masses were WRONG, not tens, dozens, or even hundreds, but thousands of times. So the question is, why is it so tempting for us to follow such erroneous thinking? The answer is simple; no one wants to feel lonely. No one wants to stand out like a sore thumb. Everybody wants to feel appreciated and accepted. So, in an effort to do so, if we are not careful, we will sacrifice all that is good just to be considered normal. This is really telling about the human condition without God, if you think about it. Let me explain. We were born, all of us, with a need to love and be loved. However, because sin entered into the picture, we were separated from the presence of God, who is love. Therefore, it is the sinful nature of man who is not naturally inclined to go to God, to fill this void by attempting to gain acceptance the first chance he gets. For some, that may mean joining a gang; for others, it may mean entering into an affair; yet others may just be trying to gain popularity, but regardless of the results, the reason is always the same; we just want a place to fit in. Unfortunately, however, without the core problem which separated us from God’s acceptance in the first place (sin) being resolved, there is no real joy or happiness in this life. But, the good news is this; when one comes to Christ in repentance of sins and faith in His finished work at Calvary, receiving Him as Lord and Savior, he or she is immediately made righteous in the eyes of God, made accepted in the beloved (Eph. 1:6), never to be lonely again! Oh, sure, believers are a peculiar people, and we don’t fit in with this world’s system, but we are in with the One that matters most, God our Creator! So, next time you’re tempted to “follow the crowd”, decide rather to follow your Creator!
